Kosovo's Museums
Ethnographic Museum
The Ethnological Treasure of Kosovo is an ethnographic museum in Pristina, Kosovo. It is located in the Emin Gjiku Complex, a monument of culture from the 18th century. The house was once owned by the family of Emin Gjikolli.
In 2002, the Ethnological Museum opened its exhibition of a permanent nature, in which ancient clothing, tools, containers furniture, old weapons, etc., were presented.
Until 1990, the Emin Gjiku Complex served as a nature museum, but after the completion of internationally funded conservation works in 2003, it was turned into an ethnological museum housing a vast collection of traditional costumes as well as utensils, handcraft elements, and other tools used in everyday life.
Albanian League of Prizren Museum
The Monumental Complex of the Albanian League of Prizren is a museum complex and cultural heritage monument located in the historic city of Prizren, Kosovo.[1] This monument belongs to the “architectural” category, approved with number 414/77 and is under state protection.[2]
The Complex is now home to photographs, documents, objects, clothing and other cultural artifacts that date from the time of the League of Prizren.
After the 1950s, mass demolitions were made, in the name of road expansion, and the Lumbardh River was reshaped for “modernizing” the city.
Kosovo Museum
The Kosovo Museum is the national museum of Kosovo, located in the city of Pristina. Established by Yugoslav authorities in 1949, this is the largest museum in Kosovo. It is situated in a 1889 Austro-Hungarian-style building, formerly used as the high military command headquarters.
Founded in 1949, the Kosovo Museum has departments of archaeology, ethnography, and natural science, to which a department for the study of history and the National Liberation Struggle was added in 1959. It has been active in sponsoring archaeological excavations, conservation and other scientific work. Since 1956 it has published an annual journal called Buletin i Muzeut të Kosovës, with articles in Albanian (with summaries in French, English, or German).[4]
Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina
Stacion – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina is a contemporary art institution working at the nexus of contemporary art, architectural research, interdisciplinary education, and public policy.
Established in 2006, Stacion is a space produced for artists and other socio-political workers committed to reflecting on and responding to relevant challenges in contemporary society. Our collective approach is active, critical, and emancipatory.
Stacion acts as a social platform: fostering dialogue with various, intersecting publics; working with clear social and political intentions; encouraging an engaged and grounded approach to artistic practice, architectural research, and public policy; promoting interdisciplinary education; fomenting intellectual independence; and working to create conditions where contemporary thought and practice can freely flourish.
